skyrim, skyrim se, fallout 4, fallout nv all run fullscreen x without the "failed to initialize renderer" problem. maybe something to do with WDDM ? (like the problems this game had with the fall creators update and wddm until MS fixed it last year).

The other issue is that your drivers may simply be too up to date. Work your way down the list until you find the solution that fixes your problem. Go to the game's folder and install everything from the redists folder.
